Aurora-Con Policies

Aurora-Con's Intent and Polices

The primary purpose of Aurora-Con is to provide a fun and safe experience for as wide a range of attendees as possible. We're all here to have a good time, so please act responsibly.

Disruptive Behavior Policy

Your registration at Aurora-Con entitles you to enjoy the primary benefit of that registration: you get to attend Aurora-Con! But as the man said, with great power comes great responsibility.

We will work very hard to ensure that Aurora-Con takes place in a safe and family-friendly environment, and we need your cooperation. We have policies to address specifics such as weapons and lost children. We also have a general policy that we do not tolerate disruptive behavior of any sort, and we can and will take action when we see something we feel is dangerous or disruptive. The type of action we take may range from a quiet but stern word in private to forcible ejection from the convention,  (possible revocation of your membership in AuroraCorp), or even criminal charges. (The action taken is solely at the discretion of AuroraCorp.)

The sorts of things that may trigger such action include fighting (fake or real), heckling, impeding traffic flow, offensive behavior, failure to observe basic hygiene, public inebriation (or similar intoxication), or any other failure to follow the rules. Remember, anything illegal outside the Egan Civic & Convention Center is illegal inside the Egan Civic & Convention Center. If your behavior is clearly problematic, we will deal with it as a problem. Show common courtesy to your fellow otaku, and follow the rules, and there's no problem.

Children at Aurora-Con
Aurora-Con wants to ensure the satisfaction and safety of all of our members, especially children. In order to safeguard the well being of our youngest attendees, Aurora-Con has put these policies into effect and offers some advice when it comes to keeping track of children at a convention.

A parent or guardian must accompany all children under the age of 12 at all times.

Children are required to carry some form of written identification and parent/guardian contact information with them at all times so that Aurora-Con staff may contact the parents or guardians should the need arise.

THERE IS A CONVENTION-WIDE PA SYSTEM.

We will be able to page your child if he/she becomes lost.

Recommendations
Here are some suggestions for keeping your children safe.

· First and foremost, please do not leave your child unattended at Aurora-Con, please.

· Make sure your child knows important information, such as your name, what you are wearing, what hotel you are staying at (if any), a cellular phone number, and a home phone number. If a child is lost, we will make every attempt to contact you through this information.

· It is a good idea to set up meeting places and times for children older than 12. Aurora-Con suggests that you do NOT use the following locations as meeting areas: the Dealer's Room, as it is could be constantly crowded and is extremely large; or any video theater because they are dark and also could be crowded. We do suggest using landmarks, such as the lobby information booth of the Egan Civic & Convention Center Aurora-Con wishes you and your children a safe and happy convention!

Autograph Policy
To allow as many attendees as possible to receive an autograph from convention Guests of Honor, we ask that you please obtain only 1 (one) autograph per trip. We will not bar any attendee from re-entering the line to obtain additional signatures during the scheduled autograph times, but we ask that you allow others to receive their signature in a timely fashion as well. Attendees, who arrive early, please respect those who are in line for an earlier session by following directions given to them by Aurora-Con Staff present. Also please make sure that if you want to have the guest sign a product that they were involved in, you. You will need to make sure that the product is a properly licensed good. Each Guest of Honor will have designated autograph times during the convention.

Bare Feet
Bare Feet are prohibited in any public/function areas of the Egan Civic & Convention Center. All convention attendees whether they are in costume or not, are required to have some type of foot covering. Acceptable foot coverings are shoes, socks, sandals, flip-flops, aqua sox, and slippers. So it means when you enter the Egan Civic & Convention Center, you must be wearing some foot covering. Those who do not comply with this rule may be confronted by Egan Civic & Convention Security to change their current attire to include some foot apparel. Failure to comply may result in your removal from attending or participating in Aurora-Con. If you have no shoes or foot covering, you will be asked to put some on or you will not be granted admittance to the convention.

Food
The Egan Civic & Convention Center does not allow outside food items in the facility, only those items purchased within the Egan Civic & Convention Center are allowed. There are several food options available. Some exhibitors may have gotten permission from the catering of the Egan Civic & Convention Center to have such items as Pocky and Ramune.

Harassment and Assault
A person who harasses another is guilty of a gross misdemeanor punishable under the Alaska Human Rights Law: AS 18.80.220. Harassment is generally any behavior that intentionally annoys, threatens, or alarms another person. This includes any unwanted physical contact, following someone around a public/function area without a legitimate reason, or threatening to physically attack someone. Remember, that if you approach someone and they tell you no or to leave them alone, your business with them is done. If you do not leave them alone as they have requested, your actions may be grounds for a complaint of harassment. Offenders will be given a strike per the Security Policy or may be required to hand over their badges if the offense warrants, decided by the Security Manager and leave convention areas and a formal complaint may be filed with local authorities. If you feel you have been accused unfairly, you may appeal to the Executive Board, but their decision is final. If you feel that you are being harassed, you have a right to file a complaint that will be investigated. If you have been assaulted, please report the matter immediately to Egan Civic & Convention Center Security.

Liability
Aurora-Con and AuroraCorp, its staff and its affiliates are not responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or injury. Attendees are responsible for their individual actions and any repercussions that may result. Staff is on hand for assistance in any situation, but any civil or medical emergency is to be handled directly by that authority.

Photography
Photography of original artwork is not allowed without permission of the artist. Photography of all other aspects of the convention is allowed, as long as it does not disrupt events or the flow of traffic and the subject does not object. Please be considerate and ask first before taking pictures of guests, convention staff, other attendees or the general public.

Signage Policy
Please refrain from wearing signs that offer services in public. Examples: "Glomp Me, Hugs For $1, Backrubs for Free".

Theft Policy
Any Aurora-Con attendee caught in the act of shoplifting/stealing will be handed over to the authorities, have their badge pulled and refused service into all future Aurora-Cons. No exceptions.

Weapons at Aurora-Con

Weapons NOT Permitted

Weapons not permitted at Aurora-Con include, but are not limited to the following:

NO LIVE STEEL at all will be permitted on the premises of the Egan Civic & Convention Center. Live steel is defined as swords, knives, bayonets, and/or other objects made of metal, which can take an edge. This holds true regardless of whether the object is actually sharp. This includes star knives/shurikens. A sheathed sword is still live steel.

NO GUNS of any kind will be permitted. Examples include, but are not limited to, pellet guns, BB guns, air guns, crossbows, dart guns, blowguns, water guns, or water pistols. Real guns, replicas of real guns, stun guns, and tasers are also prohibited. The ONLY exception to this rule will be prop guns or resin models that are easily identifiable as toys, provided that they possess no moving parts and are clearly marked with a non-removable orange tip.

Nunchaku are not permitted.

Explosives or chemicals of any kind including, but not limited to, smoke powder, sparklers, and fireworks, are not permitted at the con.

Finally, if it is illegal outside the Egan Civic & Convention Center, it is illegal inside the Egan Civic & Convention Center.

Illegal weapons will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Weapons Permitted

Staves, bo sticks, boken, shinai, and wooden swords will be permitted.

Fake, prop, or made-up weapons (i.e. made of tissue paper, plaster of Paris, cloth) are permitted if they are safe and not dangerous to others around you. (Dangerous conditions include, but are not limited to, wires sticking out, items that trip others, clothes lining someone, etc.)

Prop weapons shall be limited to less than eight (8) feet in height and less than two hundred fifty (250) pounds in weight (that's 2.4 meters and 114 kilograms for you metric folks).

Behavior with Weapons

Misuse of any weapon or prop, such as swinging it in a public area or causing hazards to others, will result in the weapon or prop being deemed unsafe for the convention.

If a weapon or prop is deemed unsafe for the con, we will ask you to remove the weapon or prop from the convention and store it in your private quarters (your home, hotel room, or car).

Any weapon purchased in the Dealer's Room must be boxed and removed from convention property immediately, and should remain boxed and stored in your private quarters. Weapons are not to be taken out of their packaging or wrappings while on Egan Civic & Convention Center property.

All props and weapons brought into the convention may be inspected and approved or rejected by Aurora-Con staff, including those that may have prior approval (other conventions, previous conventions, or pre-convention approval by Aurora-Con staff).

All questionable weapons or props will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

All decisions made by AuroraCorp and/or the Public Safety Staff of the Egan Civic & Convention Center are final.
